ARTIST STATEMENT:

Lene Ryden’s vessels have been altered by having objects thrown at them when they are at their most malleable. Sheer energy and randomness of the impact stands strong as the pieces communicate powerfully with the viewer. All are damaged in a variety of ways; a whole that by sudden impact is changed: unrecognisable, a known transformed into the unknown, no longer a whole, violated and broken.

Lene Ryden’s work comprises two different, but complimenting styles; “Unique vessels” and “Damaged Goods”, they both embody qualities of tactility, boldness and surprise.

“Unique vessels” are beautifully thrown vessels, hand decorated with a range of coloured stains and glazes in colourful forms with either dreamy undertones or loud contrasting marks. They are one-off pieces but distinguishably connected.

“Damaged Goods” are mainly thrown vessels which has been altered by throwing objects at them, when the clay is at its most malleable. The sheer energy and randomness of the impact stands strong as the pieces communicate powerfully with the viewer. All are damaged in a variety of ways. The purpose is to give voice to the experience of loss, a whole that by sudden impact is changed: unrecognisable, a known transformed into the unknown, no longer a whole, damaged, violated and broken.

Lene loves creating vessels on the potter’s wheel where going with the rhythm of the clay, offers her pure satisfaction, at the same time as having a sense of losing control. She thrives on creating pieces that she connects to emotionally and Lene hopes that her audience is moved by both seeing and using her pieces.
