ALICE HOWARD-GRAHAM – TEXTILES
Alice Howard-Graham is a Printed Textile Designer-Artist. Alice studied on the BA (Hons) Textile Design degree at UCA Farnham from 2009-2012, later going on to the Royal College of Art, where she completed a Masters in Textiles in 2016. With over 9 years experience of working as a Print Designer for both fashion and interior brands in London – Alice now divides her time between freelance clients and producing unique silk screen-printed artworks and commissions. She has been a Visiting Lecturer on the Textiles course at UCA Farnham since 2017. More recently, she has carried out an Artist Residency within UCA, working closely with students and staff within the Textiles department and school of Craft & Design. Alice has a close connection to Farnham town – having lived and studied within the town, she enjoys being part of the thriving Craft-based community, meeting other makers and tutoring at UCA.
Alice’s work has a distinctly graphic feel. Often drawing on her photography for inspiration, she works in an abstract way – masking off areas, extracting shape and interesting compositions from her photographs, whilst juxtaposing intricate linework with bold areas of solid colour. Using different types of layering processes and dyes enables her to create sophisticated patterns and marks – making every screen-print ‘one of a kind’. From dye techniques, open-mesh printing, to methods of extracting the printed dyes from the cloth, she has an experimental and yet highly perfected method of designing.
